PowerBuilderTV Celebrates Two Years of Webinars

With a varied range of subjects from Taking PowerBuilder to the Cloud, to Adding Single Sign-On to PowerBuilder Applications, we have been working to keep the community up-to-date on PowerBuilder tips and tools. As our two year anniversary approaches, we’d like to share with you a little insight into how things are going so far.
We’ve had great contributions from the PowerBuilder community including some prominent community members such as Dave Fish and John Strano, among many others, and so it’s no surprise that PBTV has had more than 5 000 registrations in 2011.
Over the past two years, PBTV has worked to make information on PowerBuilder more accessible to a growing and increasingly diverse audience, with broadcasts in three different languages: English, Spanish and French.

The Mobile Business Object... Your Mobile Way Forward

As you probably know the Mobile Business Object (MBO) is at the heart of Sybase's UnWired Platform, which is a Mobile Enterprise Application Platform used in turn as part of the SAP Mobility Platform. Once defined the MBO can be used in Native (such as iOS) as well as Hybrid Web Container Applications. It can be described in four points. Defines the data you want to use from your backend system and exposes it to be used for your mobile application /workflow. Created using our simple, graphical tooling inside the Eclipse development environment. Re-usable, allowing you to leverage across multiple device types. Future proofing of your application, when new device types are added your same MBO can be used.

Sybase Celebrates 20-Year PowerBuilder Milestone

Sybase, Inc., on Monday announced the availability of Sybase PowerBuilder 12.5, the second .NET release of Sybase's award-winning rapid application development tool. PowerBuilder 12.5 empowers developers with the easiest, fastest and most cost-effective solution for creating modern and visually appealing business applications on the Microsoft Windows 32 ((Win32)and .NET Frameworks. Today's announcement was made at Sybase TechWave, collocated with SAP TechEd 2011 and being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from September 12-16.
"Sybase PowerBuilder has remained throughout the years a bastion of application development productivity for a wide class of enterprise applications that combine heavy database orientation with a highly productive graphical user interface (GUI)," said Al Hilwa, program director for IDC's Application Development Software research. "The direction that PowerBuilder has taken to become a seamless Windows .NET environment with the Visual Studio shell incorporated into its infrastructure has meant that the product can now be considered equally for evolving existing systems and for developing new ones for traditional Windows 32 environments and for .NET."

The Age of the Enterprise App Store Is Here

The advent of BYOD (bring your own device) culture to the Enterprise has ushered about the “app culture” faster for IT departments than expected. Analysts agree that key to IT’s future in mobilizing today’s workforce lies with mobile device management and the move toward an Enterprise App Store model that parallels the experience consumers find today via Apple and the Android Marketplace.
Prosumers (professional consumers) expect the wealth & breath of applications within the Enterprise as well as outside. Having an Enterprise App Store allows the Information Worker to see what their company suggests is a productive app for their use, which is outside of their internal developments... as well as a way of providing in-house written apps, in a manner which is natural to their Prosumer employees. This is something that SAP and Sybase believe in completely and are already working on such models.

Predicting Mobility Trends

Just over a month ago I spoke to a few colleagues on the subject of Enterprise Mobility and I went into my Evangelistic mode proclaiming that...
"Mobility in business is now the norm and that any company that is not looking at mobilizing their workforce and creating Mobile Information Workers, will be left in the starting blocks, where as others sprint away allowing proactive business processes and access to core information anytime anywhere".
Then out of the blue one colleague asked me what my predictions would be in the area of Mobility for the next three years. I immediately started to chuckle and said that it would be hard enough to predict the next 12-18 months, but after I stopped laughing I started to brainstorm my thoughts and predictions for the next 12-18 months ahead.

Dutch-Bangla Bank Selects Sybase 365 for Mobile Banking in Bangladesh

Sybase 365, a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc., on Monday announced it has been selected by Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL), one of Bangladesh’s largest banks, for its mobile banking platform.
“Sybase 365’s platform allows us to deliver the best possible mobile banking services to our customers,” said Abul Kashem Md. Shirin, Deputy Managing Director, DBBL. “Bank-led mobile banking is the standard worldwide and we hope that efforts to pioneer mBanking will propel other banks to adopt similar services and accelerate the process of financial inclusion in other developing markets.”
There are around 160 million people in Bangladesh, of which, only 13 per cent have bank accounts. By using Sybase 365 mBanking platform, DBBL can now reach the rural and unbanked population, of which 45 per cent are mobile phone users. With capabilities to conduct local and international money remittance, Bangladeshi expatriates will also be able to easily remit money to the mobile accounts of their families, who can then make a withdrawal at the nearest retailer or cash point. The service will be available on all mobile devices with subscription to any of the six mobile operators of Bangladesh.

PowerBuilder .NET Migration & XAML Workshop in Tel Aviv

I've been on the road in North America a lot lately delivering one day .NET overview and migration seminars in cooperation with ISUG. Last week I had a special treat. I traveled to Tel Aviv Israel to deliver an extended two day version of my seminar. My local sponsor was NessPro, Ness Technologies, the official Sybase distributor in Israel. Nestor Cohen, Development Solutions Manager was my local partner. Nestor really knows the local PowerBuilder community. According to Nestor, there are about 250 PowerBuilder developers in the country. PowerBuilder applications support business processes in many sectors of the Israel's flourishing economy including, military, government, telecom, and health care. Twenty developers turned out for the two day event which was held in Ness University, a state of the art training facility. I used this event to roll out pieces of my new Mastering Essential WPF / XAML with PowerBuilder .NET course. We did lots of hands on coding and there were many, many great questions as these bright top shelf developers got engaged in mastering .NET basics. To my pleasant surprise, several of the shops present were already engaged in test migrating some of their applications. They came armed with lots of real world questions and situations.

Testing the iOS Application

In the 7th and penultimate article of my Sybase UnWired Platform Series developing against iOS, we have created the app and now need to iteratively test. Testing the iOS/SUP application uses a combination of Apple's Xcode Environment, the SUP Control Center and the Logs generated by the Unwired Server. Below is a screen shot of the SUP Control Center web console. This is where we need to register a user against the Unwired Server, including an activation code, before we run the iOS client that has been written.

Will Apple Make the M-Wallet a Reality?

Lately there has been a lot of rumor on the web about the iPhone 5, or whatever it will be called... 4GS? Also today we have the announcement of the iPad 2. One thing that most iSpeculators and Technical iBloggers seem to agree on, with regard to the iPhone 5, along with more internal memory for running of programs and a faster processor, is the use of NFC (Near Field Communication). Yes still speculation until the time the next iPhone will be announced, which will probably be in June at Apple's WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference), but worth talking about in advance. I am also wondering if we will see NFC in the iPad 2 or will Apple wait until a later rev?

Objective-C Object Wrapper Creation

We are in the 5th article in my series of 8, covering the creation of an Enterprise iOS application using the Sybase Unwired Platform, with the ability to synchronize data. By now you should know that for the Sybase Unwired Platform, Mobile Business Objects (MBOs) are the encapsulation of the business process logic and data into a reusable unit that can be accessed from a variety of clients. Developers can bundle MBOs and generate the device application code required for an advanced developer to develop device applications for mobile devices in the Native SDK required and that for this example is Objective-C. The process to create the Object-API is to use the Code Generation Wizard, within the Unwired Tooling, to package the MBOs that you want to access, and generate metadata and other artifacts required for a Objective-C, Java or C# developer to create device applications using the development environment most familiar to them. In the case of iSurvey the environment being Apple's Xcode
read more

Sybase CTO to Present The Race Towards Zero at Cloud Expo 2011 New York

A number of verticals, particularly Financial Services, are moving towards a zero latency environment, where the reduction of time between decision and action is critical. For example, high-frequency trading is a computerized transaction that takes advantage of the millisecond gap between events and their impacts on global financial markets. As machines trade with and against each other, the race to zero latency is more intense than ever. Even organizations outside of the financial services industry need immediate access to information to make competitive business decisions.
In his session at the 8th International Cloud Expo, Irfan Khan, CTO of Sybase, will discuss current approaches reducing latency and expand your knowledge on how to exploit this technology to your advantage.

What Will Happen to the Corporate Developer in 2011?

I thank my lucky stars every day that I am part of an industry that is able to push the limits and is always evolving. Years ago I started my career with COBOL on MVS370 mainframes, then on to PowerBuilder in the age of Client Server, further into Java with Application Servers and now in the world of Mobile Technologies. Over the last few months I have been traveling to many countries and have had the occasion to speak to many Corporate Developers. During the course of those travels it became apparent to me that the majority of the attendees at those events, thought that the technical and business 'hurdles' for Enterprise Mobility adoption, were now mostly gone. Now even more companies are realising that mobile applications will give their Information Workers the benefit of having the data and access where they want it and when they want it. This in turn will make them more productive and proactive, which can only lead to a competitive edge.

PowerObjectParm and System.Object Types

I was working on a POC app that integrates a .NET assembly with a PowerBuilder 12.1 WPF app when I ran across this issue. Most anyone doing any assembly integration will discover the same thing. In order to save you some time and bother I’m writing my findings and suggesting a couple of workarounds here.

Background
One on the key changes to the PowerScript class hierarchy was the insertion of System.Object as the ancestor of PowerObject. Object is now the grand ancestor of all PowerScript Classes. Figure 1 shows that PowerObject now has System.Object members.

PowerBuilder in Asia Pacific

The state of PowerBuilder developers and application development in Asia Pacific.
Whenever traveling to a new venue, I concern myself with learning about the state local PowerBuilder community while promoting PowerBuilder .NET, eLearnIT's free .NET training resources hosted on Sybase.com and eLearnIT's online PowerBuilder Classic courses offer through ISUG. This week, personal affairs brought me to Hong Kong, China, a bustling oriental city. While there I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with Young Wong, Manager and Technical Evangelist whose responsibilities include the PowerBuilder product line. Young's territory includes the Philippines, Hong Kong, mainland China, and Singapore and extends southward to Australia and New Zealand.

Sybase at SAP TechEd Berlin

SAP TechEd is a new environment for Sybase, with the possibility of many or most attendees not having much experience with Sybase products, or perhaps not even having heard of Sybase, beyond the acquisition announcements. It was pleasing to see "Sybase technology" prominently mentioned as one of the highlights of the conference at the top of page #1 of the conference agenda booklet. Sybase had continued exposure during the big-hall opening session... In the pre-keynote, some metrics were shown about TechEd, including 4000 attendees in Berlin; 15000 over the joint 4 TechEd locations and '17 Sybase sessions' were highlighted, which put Sybase in the spotlight from the start.

Sybase Backs iOS 4 in the Enterprise with Device Management and Security

Sybase has expanded its support for Apple devices with a full mobile device management and security solution for iOS 4. The release of Sybase Afaria delivers proven, market-leading functionality to empower enterprise IT to effectively manage the proliferation of personally and corporate-liable iPhones, while providing a high degree of security to meet the strictest corporate standards.
“The increasing diversity of platforms being incorporated into enterprise environments, such as iPhone 4, have companies scrambling to enable the use of such high user-demand devices while maintaining corporate security policies,” said Jack Gold, President of J.Gold Associates, LLC. “Third party management and security applications like those from Sybase enable companies to augment these devices’ capabilities by keeping corporate data assets safe and separate from the private user sections of these devices. When such enhancements are deployed, these consumer devices can become capable business productivity tools connected to a corporate environment.”

Sybase Extends Mobile Device Management Solution to iPad & Android

Sybase, a provider of enterprise and mobile software, on Tuesday announced support for iPad and Android devices with the latest release of Afaria. With strong consumer adoption of highly functional mobile devices, enterprises are now able to embrace this widespread demand by providing secure access to corporate information. With the new ability to secure and manage iPad and Android, Sybase extends its ubiquitous device support to a list that includes iPhone, Windows Mobile, Windows, Symbian and BlackBerry.
"The popularity of highly functional smart mobile devices, such as iPhone, Android and now the iPad, is significantly impacting enterprise mobility support requirements as these devices increasingly cross over from consumers into the corporate setting," said Jack Gold, president and principal analyst of J. Gold Associates, LLC. "The extensive communities currently established around mobile development will enable a near term and dramatic growth of data-rich deployments of enterprise-class applications where security and manageability are key requirements. Companies such as Sybase that exhibit leadership and a deep expertise in enterprise mobility, security and management, will be required to drive this emerging evolution in mobile business solutions."

Sybase First with Spatial Database and Synchronization for Mobile Devices

Sybase, Inc., a provider of enterprise and mobile software, on Monday announced advanced spatial data functionality as part of the next release of its SQL Anywhere database and synchronization solution.
This release makes Sybase the first vendor to enable development of data-driven spatial applications for leading smartphone devices and synchronize the on-device spatial data with spatial databases, application servers and enterprise systems.
By leveraging these new capabilities, organizations in key markets such as utilities, telecommunications, manufacturing and government are able to provide field workers with access to detailed spatial information combined with business critical data in a robust and scalable way.
“We expect the Spatial Information Management market to continue to grow at a healthy, compound annual rate over the next several years,” says David Sonnen, IDC's consultant for Spatial Information Management. “Spatially-enabled Sybase SQL Anywhere addresses the occasionally-connected environment gap that exists in the spatial market today.”
