Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Hadoop Co-Creator to Leave Yahoo
He’s bound for Hadoop commercializer Cloudera

As predictably as night follows day, Hadoop co-creator Doug Cutting is leaving Yahoo bound for Hadoop commercializer Cloudera, which took in a $6 million second round in June to take Hadoop to the enterprise.

According to Cloudera's blog he starts September 1 and will apparently continue working on the Avro data serialization sub-project.

Hadoop's other founder Mike Cafarella is technically at Cloudera but only as a consultant since he'll start teaching computer science at the University of Michigan in December.

Cutting told the New York Times that his departure has absolutely nothing to do with the Yahoo-Microsoft deal that will see Yahoo send its surviving search engineers to Microsoft and doesn't want it perceived that way.

Hadoop, the open source project used by Yahoo and Facebook, dices up large amounts of data into digestible portions that can be analyzed like Google's proprietary MapReduce.
