Google App Engine is an integrated web-stack, so it may not be apparent that its computing resources can be dismembered and consumed in isolation. In this session you will learn how to:
- Use BigTable, the sweetmeat of Google technology, as a scalable database for desktop or remote web applications.
- Freely host open-source software such as a blog or CMS for your project or company.
- Run scheduled tasks and work queues to move App Engine beyond a web-stack to a general computing platform.
- Host web-services.
- Serve static web-content (for a site hosted elsewhere).
- Exploit the XMPP protocol for peer-to-peer architectures, instant-messaging, presence and machine-to-machine communication.
- Use an abstraction layer over BigTable, for access with JDBC or as a virtual filesystem.
- Run dynamic languages, such as JRuby and Clojure, on App Engine’s JVM.
