Panda Security Joins ASCII Network, Extols Cloud Computing Security
Focuses on Removing Customer Costs in Enabling Cloud Security

I've never been physically thrown out of a business meeting. But sometimes what appears as a rather flippant attitude on my part has gotten a few eyeballs to pop a bit out of my colleagues' heads. This attitude most commonly presents itself when I claim to have seen something before, and take what seems a cynical attitude about whatever "new idea" is being presented.

So goes it with cloud security. My inbox is increasingly full with news releases about new cloud security solutions, breakthroughs, alliances, and innovations.

But I can't tell what's really new versus what has simply been re-tagged with a cloud label. How many meetings at software companies these days focus on slapping a new label on an old wine bottle?

Witness a release I just received from The ASCII Group, Inc. (ASCII), "the nation's oldest and most established community of independent managed service providers, system integrators and solution providers," who have just welcomed Panda Security as a new member.

Panda's "cloud-based security solution," known as Panda Cloud Protection, "allows resellers to more easily and efficiently manage protection for an unlimited number of customers from one Web-based console, from anywhere in the world. Panda Cloud Protection removes the cost associated with managing hardware, personnel and other resources dedicated to antivirus protection by placing the infrastructure into the cloud, all while maintaining a high level of security for PCs, laptops, servers and email traffic," the company says.

So now I'll get to the main point: even if this is an example of the old wine in a new bottle, that's a good thing. Security--or perceived risks involving security--is the major angst provider and deal-stopper with cloud computing right now. So, to me, it seems that a company that has been excelling in this area for a couple of decades is likely to provide a strong solution for companies who are serving new cloud customers.

Yes?
