A Piper Jaffray analyst says JBoss and GlueCode are pressuring BEA's app server business on the pricing front and delaying WebLogic sales until GlueCode releases its J2EE version of Geronimo later this year.

The broker says it's been tracking the open source movement and "recent checks indicate the open source technology is rapidly moving to the forefront of enterprise architecture strategy decisions." It thinks it's matured over the past 12 months and that it "appears ready for prime time."

Piper Jaffray also says telecoms and financial house have made a big push into open source and describes JBoss as "a cornerstone for enterprise architecture standards." It adds that WebLogic's prospects in North America are "muted," but that outside of this market, it may be able to leverage its position in China near-term.
