Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Building Business Applications with Eclipse Server-Side Components
Building Business Applications with Eclipse Server-Side Components

Recent changes in our industry have brought to the fore many interesting forces that affect the cost of software development teams around the world. In the past 10-15 years, the industry has achieved significant progress in productivity. It is doesn't mean that we don't have anymore room for improvement, but changes that come purely from tools in development will only be slightly incremental in terms of efficiency and speed.

Another way to reduce cost is through the use of off-shoring for development and systems enhancements. However, while we experience these savings, we are seeing off-shore labor cost steadily rising (25% annually for the last 2-3 years), so this is not necessary a long-term financially attractive option. What holds back bigger leaps in cost and quality is the continuation of the monolithic design paradigm for applications? While there have been multiple attempts within the industry to introduce a more component style of development, most such efforts have been very unsuccessful (i.e., EJB, .NET, SOA).  Now, with the pervasive adoption of Eclipse (spreading rapidly beyond 50% in the enterprise), we now have a community-based infrastructure that is much better set up to support the changes that will help us transition to a whole new phase of application delivery paradigm.

During this session, Exadel Founder and CEO Fima Katz will explore how leading companies have been able to leverage next-generation technology, allowing them to build and create systems from pre-built components that are easy to deploy, develop, customize, and test. This interactive discussion will challenge participants to explore their own development strategies and consider alternatives utilizing component-based web development.
