Life Extension's Dr. Michael Smith appears on The SUZANNE Show this week on Lifetime Television

BOCA RATON, Fla., Nov. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Smith, M.D., from Life Extension, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla-based organization dedicated to the extension of the healthy human lifespan, returns to The SUZANNE Show this week to discuss the issue of inflammation, how it can both help and hurt us.  His appearance, which is one in a series devoted to nutrition and longevity, airs Wednesday, November 28, at 7 a.m. (ET/PT) on Lifetime Television.

Inflammation is our body's natural response to any sort of problem or injury.  A rush of blood is sent to the problem area to fight infection and repair damage, but sometimes this "inflamed" condition can end up sticking around longer than needed.

"Inflammation likes to hang around sometimes," says Dr. Smith, "and can actually start attacking healthy cells.  On top of that, as we age the body just naturally becomes inflamed. Another factor is poor diet."

According to Dr. Smith, 7 out of the top 10 causes of death in America can be connected to chronic inflammation, including diabetes and cancer.  Diet is the biggest contributing factor to this statistic, as Americans tend to eat a heavy proportion of processed foods, preservatives, saturated fats, and simple sugars, all of which cause inflammation.

A Mediterranean-style diet high in vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, and beans will gradually reduce chronic inflammation, but for immediate results Dr. Smith recommends dietary supplementation.  Fish oil, curcumin, and an extract from an exotic tree sap called "boswellia" top his list of anti-inflammatory compounds, each of which he explains in detail and provides dosage recommendations.  Tune in Wednesday for the entire story, or get more information by visiting http://www.lef.org/suzanneTV.
