Niklas Bjorkman wrote: Firstly I agree with your conclusion. NewSQL takes the best of the traditional databases and NoSQL databases to combine the benefits of both worlds. I do not agree that NewSQL vendors focus on giving scale-out features to transactional data. The NewSQL market is focusing on giving true ACID support combined with extreme performance, stepping away from the traditional relational structures in databases. A lot of developers appreciate the ease of accessing data using SQL and I think we will see more and more databases supporting standard SQL. As you said - NewSQL databases often maintain the...

Zoosk's "Armageddon Survey" Reveals Americans' Thoughts About The End Of The Mayan Calendar

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding December 21, 2012 (the last day of the Mayan calendar), a new survey reveals that Americans are more optimistic about this day than previously thought.  The folks at Zoosk.com, the romantic social network, recently conducted a survey among more than 4,000 of its members in the U.S. to gather their thoughts on this date, if they are preparing for it, and how the idea of the end of the world would affect their plans.

"With all the coverage about the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar, we thought it would be fascinating to ask people about the choices they would make in the face of Armageddon," said Alex Mehr, co-founder and co-CEO of Zoosk.

Zoosk's survey findings include:

  • Forget the hype about the end of the world - Americans are feeling optimistic about Dec. 21, 2012.
    • 93% of Americans think the world will not come to an end on Dec. 21, 2012.
    • Only 25% of Americans will do any kind of preparation for Dec. 21, such as buying survival gear and emergency supplies.

  • Love can endure Armageddon!
    • 68% of Americans say they would stay in the relationship they are currently in even if they believed the world were coming to an end.
    • 34% of Americans would like to spend their last day on Earth snuggling with a loved one.

  • The last day on Earth would not bring out the worst in us.
    • Only 5% would max out their credit cards.
    • Only 1% would tell-off their boss.

Zoosk conducted the survey online in November 2012.  The survey garnered 4,094 responses from members of Zoosk in the U.S.
