Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Hitting the Ground Running
Hitting the Ground Running

ColdFusion is touted as a robust e-commerce tool, and this is the truth, but as we're all seeing within these pages, there's much more than that to ColdFusion.

Ben Forta's excellent article on fine-tuning your database cache is a good example of this. We've continued our coverage of ColdFusion 4.0 with an article on developer enhancements by Charles Arehart (there's even a hint or two about Allaire's ColdFusion beta, 4.01!). And Jeremy Allaire has followed up his prophetic editorial in the premier issue with an editorial about new business models on the Web.

In order to service our readers on a wider scale, we've included an updated list of ColdFusion user groups throughout the world. Be sure to find the CFUG nearest you. You can never learn too much.

And that's just a small sampling of what our second issue has in store for you.

A Different Breed
I'm sure you've all noticed that ColdFusion developers are a different breed of programmer. We're a committed group, dedicated to making the Web a better place. And because of the dedication I see, I want for you, our readers, to make sure that we put out a quality publication, issue by issue. Contact me with any comments, suggestions or wisecracks - anything you may have for us. As I stated in the premier issue, we're gearing this magazine not only toward experienced ColdFusion developers, but also toward the newbies. New or experienced, we want to hear from you.

For our next issue we're working on a few new ideas. One is dedicating a page (maybe two) to snippets of code, sent to us by you. A "Tips and Tricks" page, if you will. For the newbies, we're thinking about a "<CFBASICS>" column that will feature one tag, in depth, in each issue. Let us know what you think.

Recent Updates
I like to think of my brain as a series of code snippets. I use a certain part to accomplish one task, then move on to the next series of information to process. (This is my way of indicating that I'm switching gears to a new topic.)

We've all received the latest copy of our bibles. Ben Forta's Advanced ColdFusion 4 Application Development has recently hit the market, as did The ColdFusion 4 Web Application Construction Kit. I'm told by a very reliable source that Ben's books are the most popular books printed by McMillan on Amazon.com. Congratulations Ben!

And, not to toot our own horn, (but I will anyway) CFDJ has appeared on the scene to rave reviews. We're very pleased with the response we've received. Again, I ask that you keep the lines of communication open and contact us with any comments or suggestions.

Here's a sampling of the feedback we've gotten from the first issue:

"I just distributed the first issue of the CFDJ to the entire Allaire Corporation staff. Everyone loves the publication! It takes a lot to impress the ColdFusion experts at Allaire but you guys have done it. The feedback is unanimous, the CFDJ is a content rich publication and a valuable source of information for any ColdFusion developer. Congratulations on a job well done!"
Brian Cleary, Allaire Corporation (bcleary@allaire.com)

"I sat down last night and read the first issue - nothing short of spectacular! Who do I give my money to? What you guys have done here is up the ante for anyone publishing ColdFusion content - I equate this to Electronic Arts i.e., if you can't build a game like NHL99, you're in the wrong business. So to then, if you can't publish a ColdFusion mag like ColdFusion Developer's Journal, you are also in the wrong business. Keep up the great work and stay in touch."
Rob Woodbridge, Director of Internet Development, Animatics Interactive Corp. rob@animaticsinteractive.com

__________

All this can only mean continued success for ColdFusion and all that surrounds it. Personally, I can't wait to see where all of this takes us.
