Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

New IBM Telecom Offerings to Deliver Cost Savings, Increased Productivity
New IBM Telecom Offerings to Deliver Cost Savings, Increased Productivity

(June 4, 2003) - A set of new technologies and solutions from IBM are designed to help telecom companies to focus on their core business as they streamline their business processes and build the next-generation infrastructure to deliver new services faster, easier, and at lower cost.

The new offerings include:

  • BladeCenter for Telecommunications: The eServer BladeCenter T system is an extension of the IBM eServer BladeCenter product. Its deployment will enable IBM to deliver systems that incorporate both the latest Intel-based processors and hardened operating systems such as carrier-grade Linux to help meet the needs of the next generation of telecom applications. eServer BladeCenter T systems will help network equipment providers and solution providers reduce the time and costs associated with developing and deploying Next Generation Network applications for critical workloads such as mobile network infrastructures, softswitches for Voice over IP (VoIP), and network services.
  • Open Integrated Platform for Telecommunications (IPT): One of the first pre-integrated solutions to help deploy Linux-based service provider solutions in the core network, IPT integrates, tests, and validates commercial off-the-shelf components from IBM and IBM Business Partners. It combines SuSE's carrier-grade Linux offering with NEBS-compliant Intel-based servers, IBM software including WebSphere, DB2 Universal Database, WebSphere Application Server for Telecom, and high availability applications for targeted IP-based solutions.
  • WebSphere Business Integration for Telecommunications: New software solutions to help accelerate new service introduction and deliver number portability by providing a framework to create solutions that help integrate and process steps with automated customer provisioning and de-provisioning systems.
  • Public Wireless LAN Solution: A complete set of offerings for Public Wireless LAN (PWLAN) including the new software solution, IBM PWLAN for Service Providers as well as consulting, integration, network design, deployment and project management services.

As telecom service providers focus on increasing efficiency and reducing costs, initiatives and solutions from IBM can help service providers improve their bottom line:

  • Cost Optimization and Strategic Transformation (C.O.S.T.): Incorporating IBM consulting and implementation services, hardware, software, and IBM Business Partner applications, C.O.S.T. uses proven processes and technologies to help e-enable Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Management, Operations Management and Network Management.
  • As part of the C.O.S.T. CRM initiative, IBM is launching the Customer Loyalty and Retention and Business Transformation Outsourcing solutions. This can arm telecoms with key customer information to more effectively align their resources based on customer value while potentially lowering costs, protecting revenue streams, and reducing churn.
  • Telecommunications Data Warehouse (TDW): IBM is announcing a new telecommunications-specific enterprise data warehouse model. Based on an open standards, flexible, scalable infrastructure, IBM TDW helps carriers implement a comprehensive data warehouse solution through phased development.
  • IBM Content Management: IBM offers telecommunications companies a solution based on DB2 Content Manager and WebSphere Portal that allows companies to link information from disparate sources, including content from document and image repositories and systems through Web services. This solution demonstrates dynamic collaboration, pervasive access, and content-enabled applications to help telecoms manage virtually any type of content. And, through a unified portal view, call center employees can immediately access information, helping build customer loyalty through a faster, more complete response.
