OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is forming a CGM Open Member Section. The primary focus will be to advance the vector-based graphics standard, WebCGM version 1.0. This initial version was completed in 1999, and revised in 2001, through a cooperative effort of CGM Open and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3). WebCGM is used in industries where online electronic data must be accessed and graphically represented, such as parts catalogs and medical documentation. The goal of the OASIS CGM Open WebCGM Technical Committee will be releasing version 2.0 of WebCGM. Emphasis will be laid on creation a Document Object Model (DOM) and an XML companion file architecture. The companion file will associate metadata with file objects. While the creation of the DOM will data kept as graphical files to be dynamically accessed. "WebCGM 2.0 will incorporate critical new features needed in the marketplace," said Dave Cruikshank of the Boeing Company, chair of the OASIS CGM Open WebCGM Technical Committee. "We expect WebCGM 2.0 to become the core profile for all industry sectors, ensuring vendor-neutral interoperability between CGM-enabled products." The project is to be completed later this year. Airbus, Arbortext, Auto-trol Technology, The Boeing Company, US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and others are all members helping in WebCGM 2.0's development.
