Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Mellanox, Dell and AMD Bring High-Performance Computing Expertise to More Organizations
Hosted Under the HPC Advisory Council, Companies Provide Open Access to High-Performance Computing Cluster

Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ:MLNX) (TASE:MLNX), a leading supplier of semiconductor-based, server and storage interconnect products, today announced that as part of the HPC Advisory Council, Dell, AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) and Mellanox will provide open access to a jointly developed high-performance computing cluster in an effort to support the creation of new applications and workload best practices.

To create application and workload best practices, Mellanox, Dell, and AMD have provided a new Dell PowerEdge SC 1435 twenty-four node cluster, utilizing the latest Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors and Mellanox ConnectX® InfiniBand adapters to the HPC Advisory Council Cluster Center. The new cluster, named Osiris after the green Egyptian god, is located in the Mellanox facility in Santa Clara, California, and provides local and remote access for users. Remote access can be requested at www.mellanox.com/clustercenter.

With the main goal of creating best practices within compute-intensive market segments, the HPC Advisory Council Cluster Center enables end users to benchmark their applications on industry-standard HPC environments, said Gilad Shainer, director of technical marketing at Mellanox Technologies. Our own experience tells us that InfiniBand-based solutions can significantly improve productivity in many different markets, so we are pleased to see the HPC Advisory Council driving new collaborative efforts to extend the benefits of HPC technologies by reducing procurement cycles and installation time and making pre-tuned application guidelines available.

Dedicated technical teams from Dell, AMD and Mellanox will work with key organizations and independent software vendors to qualify, optimize, and explore ways to maximize compute system productivity. Together the companies will provide guidelines on using application-targeted clustering solutions in various technical computing markets such as weather analysis, automotive crash simulation, life science, bioscience, and oil and gas exploration.

Dell HPC solutions are designed for simplification of use; to speed deployment times, lower the cost of management and provide the performance needed for innovation, said Judy Chavis, director of business development and product management, Dell Inc. Our participation in the HPC Advisory Council allows Dell to develop deeper collaborations and create more robust solutions so organizations can focus on solving their most complex challenges rather than the underlying technology.

Increasingly, high-performance computing (HPC) technologies and the rapid adoption of cluster computing continues to drive a variety of industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and financial services, said Scot A. Schultz, senior strategic alliances manager, HPC, AMD. We are working with the HPC Advisory Council to demonstrate innovative approaches to increase application productivity using AMD Opteron processors with Direct Connect Architecture for traditional HPC applications as well as mainstream business workloads including data warehousing, transaction processing and emerging technologies such as cloud computing.

The application productivity guidelines are available throughout the HPC Advisory Council web site (www.hpcadvisorycouncil.mellanox.com). While focusing on the most used applications, the collaborating companies work with end users to provide advisories for targeted application and workload optimization.

About the HPC Advisory Council
The HPC Advisory Council is a distinguished high-performance computing ecosystem that includes best-in-class original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), strategic technology suppliers, independent software vendors (ISVs) and selected end-users across the entire range of HPC market segments. The Council was formed to accelerate HPC innovations and new technologies, optimize system performance, efficiency and scalability and provide the best total solution to the end-user. The Council also operates an end-user advisory help desk to provide a centralized place for end-users HPC-related questions, such as troubleshooting, system design and usage model advisory for overall system performance optimization.

The HPC Advisory Council Cluster Center offers an environment for developing, testing, benchmarking and optimizing products based on leading-edge multi-core systems and the latest 40Gb/s InfiniBand technology. More info can be found at www.hpcadvisorycouncil.mellanox.com.
