Connecting to a database requires a number of independent layers. The application needs to incorporate software that establishes the connection and calls to the database. A database connectivity layer needs to be in place to help manage security, communications, and data flow with the database. The database has a set of interfaces that help translate the client requests into actions within the database engine.
