Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

IBM to Move 5,000 U.S. Jobs to India: AP
Represents 4% of IBM's U.S. workforce of roughly 115,000 people

IBM is reportedly transferring U.S. jobs in its global services unit to India.

The Wall Street Journal said Wednesday morning that the company was expected to tell what the paper could only call "a large number" of American workers that their jobs were either being eliminated or sent to India.

The AP waded in hours later and said 5,000 would be cut, representing 4% of IBM's U.S. workforce of roughly 115,000 people.

IBM@Alliance suggests the layoffs will come down Thursday.

IBM's earnings were up 12% to $4.42 billion last quarter; it's forecast no strain this year because of the economic slowdown; and it's supposedly in talks to acquire Sun for billions of dollars.

Recently IBM reportedly laid off around 4,600 people.

It's also unclear whether IBM might be a bidder for the disgraced Indian outsourcer, Satyam.

The Journal says Global Services has 180,000 people worldwide.
