Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Linux Foundation to Push openSUSE Build Service
Development platform can be used to package software for all major Linux distributions

The Linux Foundation is adding the openSUSE Build Service to the Linux Developer Network (LDN). It's the only development platform that can be used to package software for all the major Linux distributions as well as provide transparent infrastructure for the creation of the entire openSUSE distribution.

The widgetry can now support compiling for the ARM platform, used mostly in embedded devices.

The Linux Foundation will provide an interface to the build service via the Linux Developer Network site.

The widgetry can create packages for CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu as well as openSUSE and its cousin SUSE Linux Enterprise.

The addition of the openSUSE Build Service to the LDN complements LDN's AppChecker application, which enables developers to create portable applications for Linux. The build service should help them deliver these apps.

The latest release of the build service also support building openSUSE appliances, live CDs, installable USB images, Xen images and VMware images. Developers can now create their own custom openSUSE distribution using the build service.
